Some excellent tips here Suzannah - thank you.

When I published my second book (Get the Life you Love and Live it), I wrote every day for an hour and then 3 months later engaged an editor for proof reading. She ripped the book to bits and I spent another month re-writing it.

Somehow it still didn't resonate and one day almost by magic, the book came alive when we added the "and live it" bit to the book title. Suddenly it made more sense.

So the learning was to engage an external professional editor, step away for a few days and revisit the title and / or objective of the book / article.

It paid off for me and my self-published book was listed nationally in all the Borders stores in the UK:-)

Arvind,
Thanks for your comment. It might be difficult watching an editor shred your hard work, but you have proof that process made all the difference.
If you come back soon for Part IV: Phone a Friend, I'll be talking more about finding sources of critical feedback for your manuscript.
Thanks for sharing your story!

Yes, I totally agree. It's amazing what you notice after you've let a post 'settle' for a number of hours.

I would really appreciate an article on punctuation some time Suzannah, that would be so helpful.

Thanks Melanie :)

I haven't written an article on punctuation, but I certainly can and will! I must admit to being the same as you. I'll proofread a couple of times, but it isn't until the post is published that I start noticing errors. Letting a post sit for more than 24 hours first seems to be the best way for me.

Great post Suzannah.

I often wonder if my punctuation is correct. Do you have any articles written on these rules somewhere else on your blog?

I find reading aloud to be one of the best methods of spotting errors. Annoying, I also seem to be able to spot an error really easily just as I've hit the publish button on my blog - not a good tactic!
